All They Did Was Save The World
“All High” Stadium takes on a whole new meaning when seven of the world’s top drum corps take to the field. “To the stratosphere” is more like it. Sunday’s Tour of Champions spectacular was a testament to the hard work, dedication and talents of many people. There aren’t enough words to express our gratitude to everyone on the field and behind the scenes; the show wouldn’t have been possible without you.
First, to the amazing musical athletes on the field and the legions of volunteers, parents, and staff members that keep these corps moving — thank you. The discipline and showmanship of every corps member are unparalleled; the world is bettered through your example of commitment, teamwork, and grit.
Thank you to Drum Corp International Executive Director Dan Acheson and his staff, especially for their support with our last-minute venue change.
Our gratitude goes out to Sue Eager and the Buffalo Public Schools, and the All High Stadium crew headed by Rick Finnegan for stepping up to the plate after Ralph Wilson Stadium and the University of Buffalo became unavailable. We’d also like to thank the Buffalo United Charter School as well as the Buffalo Parks and Recreation Department.
A special thank you to Demone Smith and the Buffalo Common Council for their support. Hats off to the Buffalo Police Department and Chief Kevin Brinkworth for keeping things running smoothly and for providing a caravan escort for the Santa Clara Vanguard as they made their way from Riverside High School to the stadium.
We’d like to thank our media partners: The Buffalo News, WKBW-TV Channel 7, and Town Square Media/WYRK-FM. Your support over many years has been invaluable in keeping the drum corps activity alive and well in Western New York.
To our sponsors Tim Hortons Cafe and Bakeshop and Comfort Suites Downtown Buffalo, thank you for making our event more comfortable and a little sweeter. A special thank you to First Student Transportation for providing the free parking shuttle service, and also to the NFTA for their help.
Special thanks to Drums Along the Waterfront Webmaster Dave Gilbert, Joe Kirchmyer and Kirchmyer Media, Ken Dobmeyer of Media Pros, John Disciullo and WBBZ-TV, Trey Measer of Bee Publications, and Community Papers of Western New York.
For getting the crowd primed for a great show to come, thanks to Downbeat Percussion and Prime Time Brass for your master showmanship during the pre-show.
Thank you to our housing coordinator, Judy Thomas and her crew, and to our host schools, Akron High School, Attica High School, Bennett High School, Eden High School, Lancaster High School, Orchard Park High School, and Riverside High School.
Last but certainly not least, we couldn’t put on such a great show without the help of an incredible staff of volunteers including Dave Robbins, Joanne Thweatt, Pastor James Giles and the Buffalo Peacemakers, and volunteer crews from Univera Healthcare and Shea’s Performing Arts Center.
Drums Along the Waterfront has been serving drum corps fans of Western New York, southern Ontario, and the surrounding area for many years with music in motion and artistic excellence. We’ve also been active in community outreach and support for the arts education of young people for almost twenty years. From the smallest of corps to the world champions that you saw on the field this year, none of this could have happened without you, the fans. Thank you for keeping the activity of drum corps alive in Western New York. We hope to see you back for many more shows to come.
